Gallery: Puri, fish village

A few scenes from the coast area in Puri.

The seaside region separates from the rest of the city Chakra Tirtha Road known for bhang shops there. Between this alley and the shores of the Bay of Bengal are settlements of fishing families.

At dawn, the bay is full of boats. In the morning, families unravel the nets on the seashore – this is a daily ritual associated with breakfast time, as evidenced by empty plates gathered on the beach. Afterwards, the obligatory cleaning of the house and village, around one o’clock in the afternoon, begins with a siesta time, usually only for men. Wives of fishermen are running at this time to buy fish with full bowls, they come back smiling with a more springy step …

The village consists of brick houses supplemented here and there with grass mats, blue construction foil and sheet metal. Almost each of the houses has colorful wedding pictures and inscriptions telling who he married in this place. In the middle of the village there is a church, which reportedly introduced many improvements of its time in the environment of these people. On the opposite side is an old burnt school with huge windows, but the pitch is still alive – every day for a good part of the day, the youth play volleyball there.

A little further from the sea there is a large selection of hotels and guest houses of various classes. More at Chakra Tirtha Road are the great temple of Krishna and several temples of Sri Jagannath guarded by a pair of lions or a pair of eagles. Temple guardians have great power, which is marked by the erection of the penis.

Jagannatha’s colorful world is complemented by itinerant musicians, street vendors idli or upma – breakfast offerings placed in boilers – running children and, of course, cows, where they want to stand there. The color is complemented by camels wandering in the morning to work on the beach.
